Daily Yopp! 3.21.17 - Get the States to Protect Immigrants

Hey all! I have a special Yopp! for your state legislators, so if you don't have those numbers handy, you'll need to dig them up. Be sure to write them down or program them in your phone. As the grassroots Resistance moves forward, we'll be targeting our actions at the state and local level more and more. This Yopp! is most relevant for California residents, but I've adapted it below for non-CA folks as well.

YOPP! FOR CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS

From Kate Schatz of Solidarity Sundays

The CA Values Act (SB 54-Deleon) is a California state bill that separates the criminal justice system and the immigration system. Think of it like a big, beautiful wall between local police and Trump’s deportation machine. The CA Values Act has passed two committees and is headed to the Senate floor on March 27th for a key vote. If this bill becomes law, California will lead the way and open the door for other states and counties to adopt similar progressive pro-immigrant policies that take the state and local law enforcement out of deportations.
Unfortunately, during this critical time, the bill faces opposition from the California Sheriff’s Association, which has demonstrated its official support of Trump’s racist cabinet and agenda. LA County Sheriff Jim McDonnell has gone particularly out of his way to stand with Trump, and is actively instigating Senators to oppose the bill. We need your help to send a strong message to these sheriffs that Trump's anti-immigrant politics won't be tolerated in California.
Our local police should protect all members of our communities, and not help enforce Trump’s agenda of hate.
Please take action now:
(1) CALL THE FOLLOWING TARGET LIST OF CALIFORNIA SENATORS TO URGE THEM TO VOTE YES ON SB 54.
  • Senator Ben Allen (Santa Monica): 916-651-4026
  • Senator Steven Bradford (Gardena): 916-651-2035
  • Senator Bill Dodd (Napa): 916-651-4003
  • Senator Cathleen Galgiani (Stockton): 916-651-4005
  • Senator Steve Glazer (Contra Costa): 916-651-4007
  • Senator Hannah Beth Jackson (Santa Barbara): 916-651-4019
  • Senator Connie Leyva (Chino): 916-651-4020
  • Senator Mike McGuire (Healdsburg): 916-651-4002
  • Senator Tony Mendoza (Artesia): 916-651-4032
  • Senator Josh Newman (Fullerton): 916-651-4029
  • Senator Anthony Portantino (Pasadena): (916) 651-4025
  • Senator Richard Roth (Riverside): 916-651-4031
  • Senator Henry Stern (Canoga Park, Ventura): 916-651-4027
Call-in script:
“Hello, my name is _________ and I would like ask _________ to vote YES on the California Values Act, SB 54. The bill will ensure that state and local resources are not used to further mass deportations. The California Values Act will uphold our core principles of equal treatment, community, and compassion. Say NO to Trump’s mass deportation programs, please vote YES on SB 54. Thank you."

And regardless of their party or stand on immigration, be sure to call your own CA senator with the same script just so they have a tally.

YOPP! FOR NON-CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS

Call or email your state senators and representatives (most state legislatures have two houses like Congress) with this script:

“Hello, my name is _________ and I would like [your state] to follow the lead of California by enacting legislation similar to the California Values Act (California Senate Bill 54). This bill will separate the criminal justice system and the immigration system and protect our state's immigrant population from cruel and unwarranted deportations. Please encourage ____________ to propose or at least support similar legislation for [your state]. Thank you."
