Daily Yopp! 3.5.17 - Call on the GOP to Stand Up for America

Our nation, our freedom is in true peril. Every day, Donald Trump and his administration assails our democracy with yet another attack on the United States. We the People have been protesting in the streets and sending postcards and calling our members of Congress and attending meetings and doing everything we can to push back against what is happening.

Democrats in Congress have begun stepping up. Some are very vocal, while others work behind the scenes. I have my doubts about the allegiance of a few of them, but for the most part, Democrats are united in resisting the Trump agenda to undermine our democracy.

And then there are the Republicans.

All through the election, the GOP was anything but united. Their primary debates were like a circus sideshow, and when Trump became the nominee, many of the party's leaders were distancing themselves from Trump to avoid fallout from his disastrous campaign.

But somehow Trump won, and since then many of those who were shying away from him (Paul Ryan, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Jason Chaffetz, Mike Crapo) are now firmly behind him. These men have sold their souls and can no longer be depended on to do the right thing.

There is some hope, however. As much as some of us may disagree with their legislation and ideologies, there are a few Republicans out there who still love this country and are horrified by Trump and his followers.

We need to call on them.

Specifically, we need to put out the call to the following elder statesmen to come to the aid of their country in its darkest hour:

Senator John McCain of Arizona
Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina
Former Governor Mitt Romney of Utah
Former President George W. Bush
Former President George H.W. Bush

Today, please choose at least one of the statesmen above and send a letter or email asking him to take a public stand against Trump. Robert Reich made this statement earlier today:
We are in a crisis of governance....[T]he responsibility falls to Republican leaders. They must stand up and call this what it is: Pure demagoguery designed to distract attention from the investigations into Trump’s Russian connections.
I call on former Republican presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, former Republican senators and members of Congress, and current Republican senators and members of Congress, to stop this outrage. We are in a serious crisis of governance, and their voices are critical.
We need true non-partisan leadership at this time. Our nation must not fall to demagoguery. Today's Call to Action is to write, email, or call current and former GOP leaders to stand up to Trump. If your MoC is a Republican, then demand that she/he take a stand. If your voice is being represented by a Democrat or other, then contact a former statesman (see below for contact information). We need all voices in this fight, and today we call on the Republicans to join us.
