Daily Yopp! 1.10.17 - Oppose Rex Tillerson nomination

I know yesterday's Yopp! was pretty overwhelming. I'm going to simplify this one as best I can. Rex Tillerson is Trump's nominee for Secretary of State. He has huge conflicts of interest given his connection to Exxon, he has no foreign relations experience outside of his business, he doesn't believe in global warming, and he is good buddies with Vladamir Putin. A dangerous choice for our nation and our planet. Since senators mostly care about constituents from their own states, it's crucial that we try and get people from these states to call in: Most Critical: Tennessee, Maryland, Idaho, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Wyoming, Wisconsin

The above states have GOP senators on the Foreign Relations Committee

Second Most Critical: New Jersey, New Hampshire, Delaware, New Mexico, Connecticutt, Virginia, Massachusetts

The above states have Democrat senators on the Foreign Relations Committee If your state is not represented on the committee, then the best thing you can do is outreach to your friends who live in one of the above states and encourage them to call. It certainly can't hurt to call your own senator, but at least in California it's super hard to get through, so the time you spend might be better used by contacting friends in other states to tell them how important this particular call is. Here's the script.

  • I am calling to ask Senator _________ to reject Rex Tillerson, Donald Trump’s nomination to the position of Secretary of State. His lack of government service make him unqualified for the position, and his ties to Exxon present massive conflicts of interest. His friendship alarms many, including our own head of the Committee on Armed Services, Sen. John McCain. His actions as CEO of Exxon have flouted international law, making him someone who will not be fully trusted by other countries. I strongly urge Senator _________ to ensure a thorough set of hearings and to oppose the nomination of Tillerson. Please make a record of my call.”

  • [Rubio-specific script]: “I am calling to ask Senator Rubio to reject Rex Tillerson, Donald Trump’s nomination to the position of Secretary of State. I know that Sen. Rubio shares my concerns about Tillerson’s close ties to Vladimir Putin—in December he tweeted that “being a ‘friend of Vladimir’” is not an attribute we want in a Secretary of State. Sen. Rubio knows that Tillerson’s lack of government service make him unqualified for the position, and his ties to Exxon present massive conflicts of interest. His company has spent billions funding groups and public officials who deny the science behind climate change. Further, his actions as CEO of Exxon have flouted international law, making him someone who will not be fully trusted by other countries. I strongly urge Senator Rubio to oppose nominating Tillerson to the position of Secretary of State.”

*Majority member, Rand Paul  (Kentucky, R)
PH: (270) 782-8303 (Bowling Green)
PH: (202) 224-4343 (DC)

  • [Paul-specific script]“I am calling to ask Senator Paul to reject Rex Tillerson, Donald Trump’s nomination to the position of Secretary of State. I respect Mr. Paul’s sense of independence, and his commitment to democracy. I know he’s stated that he plans to “keep an open mind” on Tillerson, but Tillerson’s total lack of government service make him unqualified for the position. His ties to Exxon present massive conflicts of interest, as does his friendship with Vladimir Putin. Further, his actions as CEO of Exxon have flouted international law, making him someone who will not be fully trusted by other countries. I strongly urge Senator Paul to oppose nominating Tillerson to the position of Secretary of State.”

The following are the Democratic members of the Committee. They will all likely vote against Tillerson, so no need to call them all. IF one of your Senators is on the list, look her/him up and see if s/he’s released any statements on Tillerson, then call based on that (to say THANK YOU for opposing, or PLEASE OPPOSE if statement suggests support).
