Daily Yopp! 1.18.17 - States Must Step Up on Climate Change

This Week's Action: #TheWorldCannotWait on Climate Change

As the Senate considers whether climate change denier and corporate fanboy Scott Pruitt would be a good choice to head our nation's Environmental Protection Agency, let's shift our focus to those who may be in a position to marshal a defense for our ailing planet - our states' governors.

Today's task is twofold:

1. Find the contact information for your governor (and other state representatives) and program it in your phone. We'll need these numbers later. Here's a handy tool for getting the information: Contact Your State GovernorWhile you're there, plug in those numbers for the rest of your elected officials as well: Contact Your Elected Officials

2. Next, call/email/write your governors and let them know that we want them to do everything in their power to push on climate action even as Trump tries to roll it back. Each state has its unique environmental needs, so be sure to include that information in your plea. For example, Florida is in great danger of flooding due to rising sea levels, while fracking and/or wastewater disposal is linked to a sharp increase in earthquakes in midwest states like Oklahoma. Coal mining is a terrible threat to Alabama's water supply, and the pine beetle infestation is destroying Wyoming's forests. Trump and Scott Pruitt (if confirmed) will certainly do what is best for corporate America. Be sure your governor does what is best for your state.

Regardless of what the international business community might want us to believe, climate change is REAL. As some of us look ahead two years to midterm elections and four years to the next presidential election, the environment as we know it is running out of time. With Trump and corporate America in charge, we can no longer depend on the federal government to protect us. States MUST step up.

#TheWorldCannotWait until 2021. Call your governor today!!

3. If you have time, call your state representatives as well. Plug those numbers in your phone for future reference.

4. Mentally prepare yourself for the long haul. Change will not come overnight, but every small victory is proof that we can do this!
